Environmental Management

Caring for the place we call home

The reef and rainforest are part of everyday life at Ocean Safari. From our adventures at Mackay Reef to Safari Lodge and Turtle Rock Café, we have a responsibility to look after the environments we share with our guests.

Our Environmental Management Plan guides how we manage our activities, reduce our impact and identify opportunities to improve.

Protecting the reef

Before guests enter the water, our crew explain how to explore responsibly: avoid touching or standing on coral, leave shells and marine life where they belong, and give wildlife space.

Our skippers select sites according to conditions and follow responsible mooring and anchoring procedures to help protect sensitive reef habitats.

Respecting wildlife

We encourage guests to observe wildlife without feeding, touching or disturbing it. This includes marine life at the reef, birds resting on the sand cay and wildlife around our rainforest property.

Managing waste

Across our tours, accommodation and café, we separate waste for recycling and appropriate disposal, reduce unnecessary packaging and support bulk purchasing where practical.

All rubbish from our reef adventures comes back to shore with us.

Using water and energy thoughtfully

Operating in Cape Tribulation means being mindful of the resources we use. We conserve rainwater, use energy-efficient lighting and maintain our equipment to support efficient operation.

Guests can help by keeping showers short, switching off lights and air conditioning when leaving their cabins, and reporting leaking taps.

Learning from the reef

Our crew contribute observations through Eye on the Reef and participate in reef monitoring activities. These observations help build knowledge of the places we visit and inform the stories we share with guests.

Continuing to improve

Environmental management is ongoing. We review our procedures, develop our team’s knowledge and improve how we record fuel use, waste and other resources so we can make informed decisions about future improvements.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Ocean Safari acknowledges the Kuku Yalanji and Yirraganydji peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters of the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef region.

We recognise their continuing connection to Country, culture and community, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

We encourage our guests to learn more about the rich histories and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to explore this beautiful region with care and respect.
