With their graceful swimming and easy-going nature, these special encounters always make for a perfect photo opportunity coupled with some well-earned bragging rights with your friends and family!
Typically seen in the shallow waters of Mackay Reef, where they feed primarily on seagrasses and algae, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health of the reef. During the summer months they frequently appear very relaxed and sluggish, often over dosing on the harmless Moon Jellyfish which gives them a natural high..
The Great Barrier Reef provides important nesting sites for green sea turtles which in previous years has been recorded on Mackay Sand Cay. Generally, the females only return to the same beach they were born on themselves after spending the first 20-50 years at sea. Habitat loss is a big threat to the population of the Green Sea Turtle therefore it is extremely important we look after known nesting sites within the Great Barrier Reef and across the world. Ocean Safari crew are hopeful this year will be a successful nesting season on our sand cay.. time will tell!
If you are lucky enough to experience swimming with one of our locals, remember they breathe air just like you do – so slow down, give them space and enjoy what is likely to be a once in a lifetime encounter!
