Epaulette sharks are a species of carpet shark found in the shallow, sandy lagoons and coral labyrinths of Mackay Reef. Recognised by the distinctive black circular markings on their fins that resemble epaulettes, each shark has its own individual pattern – like our fingerprint.
Uniquely, they are able to do something that no other shark is able to do… walk! Yes, you read that correctly. They use their pectoral fins to thrust themselves in between low tide pools, which would otherwise leave them high and dry. This ability gives them an all-access pass to pretty well the entire reef flat where they are hunting the shallows for invertebrates, crustaceans and small fish.
Over the past 2-3 months Epaulette sharks have become a common sighting for our Ocean Safari guests. Eco Host Max is our very own Epaulette shark whisper, studying their habits and mannerisms through his snorkel encounters, he has fine-tuned the ability to frequently locate these cryptic sharks.
Our advice – get on a guided snorkel tour with Max for the best chance to have your own experience with these walking sharks!
